Are you looking to learn more about the teaching methods used in the training program in Maui? Our campus has developed a form for your use to help you understand the course descriptions, student learning outcomes, and other important information. A substitute teacher certification is not required for those who have completed a state-approved teacher education program (SATE). However, those with a bachelor's degree or higher degree (without teacher training) must complete a substitute teacher certification program. Those with less than a bachelor's degree may be hired by exception, but they must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent and must have completed a substitute teacher certification program.
Retirees can be employed in contracted positions that are labor scarce or difficult to fill if they have had a break of 12 consecutive calendar months (starting from their official retirement date) when they were not working in any state or county agency. Retirees can also work as teachers or administrators in areas of teacher shortage identified by the Department, in charter schools, or as mentors to new classroom teachers if they have taken a break of 12 consecutive calendar months (since their official retirement date) when they were not working for any state or county agency. The Maui center is dedicated to helping students from kindergarten to twelfth grade with learning difficulties, as well as their families and teachers who interact with them. Substitute teachers who do not have a bachelor's degree but who meet the specific employment requirements established by the Department are paid a daily rate depending on which class they belong to (see chart below).
